ALSHABAB ATTACK ON UPDF PEACEKEEPING FORCE IN SOMALIA

The FDC extends its deepest condolences to the families and relatives of the more than 137 courageous UPDF soldiers who tragically lost their lives in Somalia during the recent Al-Shabab attack on one of the UPDF camps. We mourn the loss of these brave men and honor their commitment to serving their country and promoting peace abroad.

While we recognize the importance of the UPDF’s deployment in Somalia to aid in the restoration of peace and stability in the region, we also share concerns regarding the absence of a clear exit plan. It is crucial that Somalia is empowered to govern its own affairs, and that the peacekeeping force is not perceived as an occupying force in the area.

When a peacekeeping force remains in a country for an extended period, it runs the risk of becoming entangled in the conflict itself. The locals may view them as part of the problem rather than as a solution. This highlights the need for careful consideration of the duration of the deployment and the potential negative consequences that may arise.

Furthermore, the process of selecting individuals for deployment in Somalia within the UPDF has been tainted by corruption. It is unfortunate that some members of the UPDF pay bribes to secure deployment to Somalia solely for financial gain, without considering their qualifications for the task at hand. It is disheartening that the Commander-in-Chief, Mr. Museveni, is aware of this issue yet has remained silent.

In addition, we recognize that the unifying factor among the people of Somalia is Islam. Therefore, an Islamic force would be better positioned to establish a stronger connection and rapport with the local population. This could foster greater trust and facilitate the process of uniting the Somali people towards a sustainable solution.

We firmly believe that a lasting resolution to the conflict in Somalia can only be achieved through the active involvement and cooperation of the Somali people themselves. They hold the key to shaping their own destiny and determining the future of their nation.

The loss of these brave men is a significant tragedy for our nation. We deeply mourn their sacrifice and reiterate our commitment to honoring their memory. Their bravery and dedication will forever be remembered as they made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace.

THE CONTINUED HARASSMENT AND ARREST OF FDC MEMBERS.

The FDC expresses deep concern over the continued harassment and arrest of our members by the authorities. It is alarming to witness the unjust treatment of individuals who are merely exercising their right to freedom of speech and expressing their concerns about the injustices prevalent in our nation.

Most recently, in Sororti city, our MP Hon. Alobo Joan and other party supporters were arrested simply for speaking out against the injustices in our country. This is a clear violation of their rights and a suppression of dissenting voices.

Furthermore, we are appalled to learn that Mr. Joram Bintamanya, our member and leader from Fort-Portal, is being hunted and targeted for arrest based on a video where he spoke about the injustices faced by Ugandans. The NRM should focus on addressing issues raised than threatening to punish individuals for peacefully expressing their grievances and advocating for a more just society.

We call upon the NRM government, which has silenced us for four decades, to reconsider its actions and respect the fundamental rights of Ugandan citizens. It is unacceptable to transform our country into a “no speaking” zone, where expressing legitimate concerns and dissatisfaction is met with suppression and persecution.

We urge those close to Mr. Museveni and his family to convey to them the message that Ugandans are not only hungry for a better future but also deeply discontented with the current state of affairs.

WE ARE HUNGRY AND ANGRY

The FDC remains committed to upholding the principles of democracy, freedom of expression, and the protection of human rights in Uganda. We will continue to speak out against injustices, advocate for positive change, and work tirelessly towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
