THE FDC MEDIA BRIEFING AUGUST 1ST 2022

SOROTI EAST BY ELECTION

Last Thursday saw voters in Soroti East go to polls to elect their member of parliament for the second time after the previous election being annulled by court on an individualized technicality.

The heightened election which we believe was won by FDC’s Hon. Moses Attan, was marred with grave irregularities which include massive Ballot staffing, voter bribery, intimidation, imprisonment by the state machinery of military RDC’s and NRM’s high ranking officials who personally engaged in the irregularities. The Electoral Commission Chairperson and his commissioners cannot be excluded in the whole illegal process where agents were arrested from the polling stations and aided by EC officials.

The  FDC doesn’t accept any results that were declared by the EC because the election lacked credibility and was not based on the democratic principles of free and fair.

ARREST OF FDC PARTY PRESIDENT

We take a strong exception to the arrest of our Party President, who was officially accredited by the Electoral Commission and all the EC chairperson would do, was to keep silent as if it was normal. FDC agents and officials like Members of Parliament, Mayors and elected leaders of the Party were arrested together with documents meant for a smooth running of the election. This was under the command Vice President, Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament.

Secondly, we call upon the Human Rights Commission and the Parliament to investigate the whole election process specifically the irregularities and arrests of FDC’S personnel on vague criminal grounds.

Lastly we thank all the people of Soroti upon their unending support towards Attan Moses and the FDC at large, and encourage them to keep with the spirit of democracy.

I conclude this presser by stating that no state machinery will intimidate us from moving towards democratic Promised Land

ELGON REGION FLOODS

The Sunday morning heavy rains in mountain Elgon areas especially Mbale district after rivers Namatala and Nabuyonga burst banks causing enormous flooding to the surrounding areas, damaging both human life and properties worth millions.

Most access roads have been cut off by the heavy running water which will lead to catastrophic social, economic and environmental effects.

The FDC, is strongly opposed to the piece meal solutions given by government in terms of emergency relief interventions like provision of temporary, medical and food supplies rather than a long lasting a holistic one like mandatory relocation of the population around  the most vulnerable areas especially Elgon ,Rwenzori and Kapchorwa which would be a reduction in  fatalities and property losses  lower .
