FDC COMMISERATES WITH VICTIMS OF KITEEZI LANDFILL TRAGEDY
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of over 21 people who according to Uganda Red Cross have been confirmed dead due to the collapse of Kiteezi landfill in Kampala.
Our hearts go out to the affected families and communities during this difficult time.
May the souls of the departed, rest in eternal peace.
We are deeply concerned that the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Government failed to address the issue of the landfill reaching full capacity in 2015, putting the lives of nearby residents at risk. This incident is a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting public safety and environmental concerns.
We urge the government to provide immediate humanitarian support to the affected individuals, including; Provision of shelter and food, Psycho-social support, Relocation and resettlement of those living near the landfill
Furthermore, we call for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As FDC we recommend the following to be undertaken by both KCCA and Government for sustainable Waste Management in Kampala;
1. Immediate Closure of Kiteezi Landfill to prevent further risks to human life and the environment as KCCA and Government identify and establish a temporary alternative facility for solid waste management.
2. Implementation of a comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan. FDC Calls for Public-Private Partnership to Address Kiteezi Landfill Crisis
We think the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Government of Uganda should enter into a public-private partnership (PPP) to manage solid waste in Kampala, with the aim of finding a sustainable solution to the Kiteezi landfill crisis.
The FDC believes that a PPP model can bring about a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the solid waste management challenges in Kampala, including the Kiteezi landfill, which has been a source of concern for residents and environmentalists alike.
This approach can leverage private sector expertise and resources to improve waste collection, disposal, and recycling services, and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for Kampala residents.
The FDC proposes that the PPP model should prioritize:
– Development of a comprehensive waste management system
– Implementation of efficient waste collection and disposal methods
– Investment in modern waste-to-energy technologies
– Promotion of recycling and composting initiatives
– Ensuring environmentally friendly and sustainable practices
We think the PPP model, will ensure a sustainable solution to the Kiteezi landfill crisis, reduce waste disposal risks, mitigate environmental hazards, create employment opportunities, and attract investment in waste management infrastructure.

5. Addressing regional issues: The mobilization drive allows the party to address specific regional issues, such as economic development, infrastructure, and social services, demonstrating its commitment to improving the lives of East Buganda residents.
