THE FDC PRESS BRIEFING MARCH 1st 2021

FDC NATIONWIDE MOBILIZATION PROGRAMME

The FDC President Hon. Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat will this Thursday launch the party’s nationwide mobilization programme at a function in Bugiri. He will lead a delegation of top FDC leaders who will include the Secretary General Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi and Chairman Ambassador Waswa Birigwa.

All candidates in the recently concluded elections and FDC branch leaders will be attending this one day meeting. The number of FDC elected leaders in Bugiri grew from below 10 to 34 (sub-county chairmen and councilors). Former Leader of the Opposition Philip Wafula Oguttu is coordinating this meeting.

The purpose of these meetings is to review the party’s performance in the last elections. A report detailing what happened in each of the districts will be compiled and presented to National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council for processing.

The report and the subsequent discussion will form the basis for the next FDC internal elections scheduled for mid this year. As you are aware the term of office for the current FDC leadership expired in July last year but because of COVID restrictions, the FDC was unable to hold internal elections. These elections are now planned for around June/July this year. The grassroots elections will be concluded by a national delegates’ conference towards end of year at which the new FDC leaders will be elected.

The Mobilization programme that starts in Bugiri will continue to cover the whole of Busoga this month and other parts of Eastern Uganda. A detailed programme will be issued in due course.

HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is concerned with total breakdown of the rule of law in the country. The military aided by Mr. Museveni has now fully taken over full control of all institutions of the state.

The Court Martial which in the law is supposed to be a tribunal trying only military men and women is slowly replacing the Judiciary. There are currently more than 1000 people who have been arrested illegally by the military, illegally tried and remanded by the military to various prisons including Kitalya and Kigo.

Hundreds of young men and women are still detained at Mbuya by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Special Forces Command (SFC), and Joint Ant Terrorism (JAT). The young men are undergoing torture day and night. Some have been tortured to death and others maimed beyond recognition.

This is the sole reason an alleged list of victims that Museveni read on television is not being released or handed over to Police. The Human Rights Commission remains with no substantive chair.

The FDC demands immediate and unconditional release of all Ugandans held by the army. The army should also disclose names of those who may have died in their hands.
